About the Department

A year later the inception of the Tagore Arts College our department was established, i.e., 1962. It was offering UG programme and PG programme. Later when PG programme was shifted to the PG centre only UG programme is offered. Presently, B.Sc. Botany, a three years programme is being offered. The department is well equipped with the class rooms, laboratories, instruments/ apparatus and chemicals for conducting theory and practical classes. The department houses a museum, store room and a small herbal garden.

The programme unfolds the knowledge on basic botany on lower plants and Gymnosperms in the first year of study with language papers along with Allied Zoology. Detailed study on plant architecture in terms of tissue structure and function, cell structure and organelle functions, and reproductive biology, Plant identification terminologies and Plant Taxonomy have been covered in the courses of second year. The third-year courses transcend the knowledge on modern subjects like Genetics, Plant Physiology and Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Plant Biotechnology, Plant Tissue Culture and Mushroom culture.
